Anglesey beaches

Known for its beautiful unspoiled coastline and awe-inspiring cliff top scenery, it comes as no surprise that Anglesey is home to an array of award winning beaches.  Whether you are looking for a relaxing sunbathe on soft golden sands, a stroll along the charming coastal path, catching impressive waves or exploring the more secluded coves and caves, you will not be disappointed with Anglesey's outstanding collection of beaches.

Traeth is the Welsh name for Beach.

Here are my favourites all close by, if you would like a good source of information to research all 35 + beaches,  I have added some photos showing the best - this is a great website Beaches | Holidays Anglesey

Benllech beach

Benllech is one of Anglesey’s top sandy beaches and has blue flag status.

A long beach with soft golden sand, where children can play safely in the sand and build sand castles to their hearts content. Benllech beach is one of those amazing sandy beaches that is both beautiful all year round, with fabulous scenery.

There is an ice cream kiosk on the promenade

The dog restrictions in the months May to September applies to the middle section only, you can access the beach on the promenade and keep your dog on a lead until you pass the restricted area.   Alternatively, you can join the beach further up via the coastal path.

In low tide it is possible to walk from Benllech along past St. David’s beach round the corner and across Red Wharf bay all of which is dog friendly.  Be careful for the tide coming in quickly when you return along the beach, or if you prefer pick up the coastal path.

There are public toilets in the car park (although they are sometimes closed in quiet periods).  There is a pay and display metre in the car park (although this is sometimes removed out of busy season).  There is limited parking on the road with time restrictions.

Benllech beach is walking distance, around 10-15 minutes although the hill down is fairly steep.

Traeth Bychan

Traeth Bychan beach is a beautiful flat sandy beach very popular with water sports. Sandwiched between Benllech and the coastal village of Moelfre It has amazing views of Puffin Island and and the Great Orme. Traeth Bychan is also the home to Red Wharf bay sailing club.

This lovely sandy beach is sheltered by cliffs. At low tide a large sandy beach is exposed, at high tide it becomes a small sheltered cove and is perfect if your dogs love to swim.

Out of holiday season, this beach is often almost deserted.   When the caravan parks and camp sites open, the beach is much busier.

It is the home of Red Wharf bay sailing club and popular for water sports.

There are public toilets in the car park (although they are sometimes closed in quiet periods).  There is a pay and display metre in the car park.  There is limited parking on the road with time restrictions.

Traeth Bychan is a 5 minute drive.

Red Wharf Bay

Also known as Traeth Coch, Red Wharf Bay is a beautiful large soft sandy beach sandwiched between three other soft sandy beaches St. David’s beach round the corner on the left, then Pentraeth beach and Llanddona beach in front of it. This is such a pretty bay whether the tide is in or out with free car parking and great food near by.  It is worth stopping at The Ship Inn, there is a large outdoor space popular with dog owners.  Popular restaurants worth a visit in the evening to watch the sunset are Tavern on the Bay and The Boat House.

This beautiful sandy beach is very popular with horse riders, walkers and dog owners, although when the tide is out, there is a huge expanse of sand so it feel very peaceful.

There are a number of ways of accessing Red Wharf Bay, either walk from Benllech Beach, drive to the car park accessed from the A5025, or you can park in the village of Pentraeth (5 minutes drive away)

Lligwy

Lligwy beach or Traeth Lligwy as it is known locally is a beautiful sandy beach which located on the north eastern side of Anglesey and is just north to the coastal village of Moelfre. This is a safe family beach where your children can paddle safely and build sand castles to their hearts content. This beach is long and wide when the tide ebbs and part of it is backed by sand dunes.

There is a cafe which thrives in busy season with a great relaxed outdoor atmosphere and additional outdoor seating.

The Anglesey Coastal Path passes through Traeth Lligwy and the stretch between Benllech and Lligwy is particularly popular due to the stunning scenery.

Lligwy is a 10 minute drive and there is a large pay and display car park (which only tends to be busy in school and bank holidays).
